Richard Ansdell, R. A. (1815-1885)
by Matthew Newsome ©2004
Richard Ansdell was an English painter and member of the Royal Academy, most famous for his oil paintings of animals, sporting subjects, and rural life.  Though from Liverpool, he traveled extensively in Northern England and Scotland.  He even built a lodge on the banks of Loch Laggan and visited Scotland whenever he could.  The local Scottish Highlanders were the subjects of many of his oil paintings.  His depictions of rural Highland life are invaluable tools for giving us a glimpse at the native dress of the average work-a-day Gael of the nineteenth century.

For more information on Richard Ansdell, visit this page maintained by his great-great-granddaughter, Sarah Kellem.

For obvious reasons I have a special interest in any of Ansdell's paintings depicting Highland dress, and I will collect them here as I find them, adding commentary as I have the time.
